Currently the law for women with a working uterus and who need help from fertility treatment states that: embryos / gametes can be stored until the intended mother is 55. For those women who do not have a working uterus and whose embryos / gametes are intended for surrogacy the current law states their embryos / gametes can only be stored for 5 years. It is proposed that this is extended so that embryos / gametes that are intended for surrogacy can be stored for 10 years, (though the law is not to be used retrospectively).

This petition is to persuade UK MP’s to change the law so that all embryos / (donated) gametes are able to be stored until the intended mother is 55, that the law should be the same for all that have to undergo fertility treatment.

Many who have to store embryos / gametes do so due to cancer, post pregnancy hysterectomy and other such traumatic, tragic situations. Such situations require a lot of time for treatment and recovery, especially in the case of cancer. And it is easy to see how more time is needed for people where a host surrogate is the only option because they:

We all know people who have undertaken fertility treatment for themselves. We have all heard how expensive it can be and some say that it can take years for them to be able to save up treatment costs for themselves and so it seems logical that those requiring the help of a surrogate should be given even more time.

It is safe and possible for the infertile to keep embryos for more than ten years and so it should be the same for the infertile requiring the help of a surrogate.

Please help us by supporting legislation changes that will end the discrimination of those patients who must use the services of a surrogate mother by ensuring their rights are the same as those who are able to undertake fertility treatment for themselves.

DESIRED OUTCOME

The law is changed so that embryos for surrogacy / (donated) gametes can be kept until the mother to be is 55
